FAQ
What does a college counselor do?
My job is to guide you through the admissions process and make the experience as stress free and enjoyable as possible for students and parents.
How exactly do you do this?
Working one-to-one, I find out what you want to study or accomplish, and help you create an educational plan to achieve it. This might include... researching majors, selecting high school courses required for your major, creating a list of best 'fit' colleges with that major, assessing GPA requirements, crafting a resume, brainstorming, outlining, and writing a thoughtful college essay, seeking out opportunities for extracurricular activities, helping you find scholarships, creating a budget, writing you a counselor letter of recommendation (LOR), and anything else that helps you submit a killer college application on time.
When should I start the application process?
Is now a bad time to start? Students who attend their top pick school typically begin planning by ninth grade. The application process itself starts in eleventh grade, and can take students 100 hours to complete. Teens who begin preparations early are 68% more likely to get accepted to their top pick school.
When are college applications due?
Application deadlines depend on the country and individual colleges. For example, in the UK, the deadline for all 2022 applications is late June. In America, the deadline for early action/early decision is early November of the student's senior year. Regular decision deadlines are in January. Can I apply to college myself?
Yes, you can.
Then why should I hire you?
Some families don't know where to start, and we offer a plan. Some parents work long hours and don’t have the time or experience to sit down with their teen night after night and help them complete their application. Enlisting the help of a college counselor is an investment in your child's future. But if you’ve been to college, understand the application process, and have the time to help your teen through the process, then you may not need a college counselor. Bravo to you!
I started a successful company without going to college. I want my child to take over the family business when I retire. Why should my child go to college?
Your child grew up under different circumstances than the way you were raised. Will your child be able to run the business without going to college? Probably. But perhaps a better question is: Will that business thrive and change with the demands of a fast-paced marketplace? College isn't just about what you learn--it's being around people who have different backgrounds and skills and ways of learning. College is about learning how to learn. When students become the first in their family to earn a college degree, they set a precedent that lasts generations. Children of bachelor's degree holders are more than twice as likely to earn a higher education. Sending your child to college is one way to ensure that he or she has the skills to grow the family business in the future, and preserve your legacy.
Can Cambodian citizens go to college in the United States?
Yes. The F-1 Visa (Academic Student) allows foreign students to enter the United States as a full-time student. The visa is approximately $510, which includes the cost of the visa itself, plus SEVIS processing and maintenance fees. Make sure to save the SEVIS receipt for your visa interview.
How much are your services?
Our fees range from $100-150 per hour. Depending on the student and their individual needs, some clients prefer the option to purchase a 'bundle' of one-hour counseling sessions. We also offer special rates for semester and year-long packages. For our full list of services, please inquire in the form above.
Do you offer services pro bono?
In special circumstances, we may offer discounted or free counseling to low-income students who possess some extraordinary skill or academic promise. If you'd like to refer someone, drop us a message in the form above.
